Laser levels with self-calibration mode?
According to Aaron Barnett of BangingToolbox: Some laser levels today come equipped with self-calibrating attributes.
If you have this type of device, you may not have to bring your unit in for professional calibration or open your device for adjustment.
With our short guide to recalibrating your self-calibrating level, you can easily reset your laser level to a precise leveling condition.

What is a self-calibration feature in laser levels?
The self-calibration feature is a recalibration mode where you can precisely adjust the beam alignment of your laser level without the need for manual calibration.
In manual calibration, you have to adjust the screws until the beam aligns precisely.
With the self-calibration mode, you will only need to push the up and down button to adjust the beam level.
How to recalibrate self-calibrating laser levels?
- Turn your laser level off and press the manual and power buttons at the same time.
- Release the power button while holding the manual one for about 10 seconds.
- After releasing the manual button, the device should have reset to self-calibration mode.
- Determine the calibration spot on the wall by using your device’s remote control. Using the navigation buttons, press up or down until the beamline points to the middle of the marked lines in both walls.
- Make sure this spot is precisely in the middle, then press “enter”. Now, your device is recalibrated to the X-Axis.
- Do the same process when calibrating the Y-axis.

How to find out if your laser level comes with a self-calibration feature?
Check your tool’s manual. You would usually find instructions in your manual on how to put your laser level on self-calibration mode and how to operate it.
Additionally, you’ll find calibrating buttons either on the remote or the laser level itself.
Final checking
After re-calibrating your laser level, test its alignment several times, just like you would test it for accuracy.
Try with new lines and ensure that the difference goes within the accepted range in your manufacturer’s specs for the laser level’s accuracy.

A reminder
Since this calibration method is much easier, you can recalibrate your laser level more frequently, especially if you are always using it.
Ideally, do this every six months or when you have not used your level for a long time.
You can also do this if you notice your level has a bump around or dropped on the floor.
